Expectorans 5 ®

syrup, 120ml

Product without prescription

Ingredients: Althaeae Officinalis Extractum fluidum, Sodium benzoate, Potassium bromide, Ammonium chloride

1. What is Expectorans 5 ® and what is it used for

Expectorans No5® possesses expectorating and antimicrobial action, as well as it relieves the smooth muscles of the bronchi. The therapeutic effects are associated with the activity of each of the ingredients individually and in combination. The active substances possess demulcent effect and suppress the coughing reflex, facilitate the expectoration, act as antimicrobials and relieve the spasms of smooth muscles; the action of potassium bromide is relaxing but sodium benzoate and ammonium chloride liquefy the mucus.

Expectorans No5® is indicated for symptomatic treatment of cough associated with bronchitis, asthma and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract.

2. The effect of the main ingredients

Traditional medicinal use of Althaea officinalis L., radix in the form of comminuted herbal substance for macerate preparation, aqueous extract or syrup is well documented in a number of bibliographic sources. The requirement of medicinal use for at least 30 years (including at least 15 years within the Community) according to Directive 2001/83/EC as amended is considered fulfilled. Based on literature data and information received from Member States, the following traditional indications are proposed: a) for the symptomatic treatment of oral or pharyngeal mucosa irritation and associated dry cough; b) for the symptomatic relief of mild gastrointestinal discomfort

Ammonium chloride is an expectorant, which helps in bringing mucus out of the lungs and thereby relieves the cough. Ammonium chloride is used to maintain the acid-base balance in the body and thus is used to treat patients with hypochloremia and metabolic alkalosis. Its expectorant action is caused by irritative action on the bronchial mucosa.

Potassium bromide is an anticonvulsant, antiepileptic medication that has been around for many years.

As excipient there is another herbal product: Thymi Herba Extractum fluidum which has wide medicinal and pharmaceutical usage. It also has spasmolytic and antitussive activity.
